Multiple Paths to Success: How Praxis Steps Empowers Candidates
Praxis Steps is an innovative modular approach launching with our new Elementary Education Fundamentals tests. This design allows candidates to take their licensure exams in smaller, focused sections—called “Steps.” This flexibility means candidates can test when they feel most prepared, reducing anxiety and barriers while maintaining rigorous standards.
Personalized Journeys for Aspiring Teachers—Meet Taylor and Jordan
Praxis Steps modular testing will transform how candidates approach licensure testing. Let’s explore how two candidates—Taylor and Jordan—can each find their best path to success, and how states and educator preparation programs (EPPs) can support them every step of the way.
Taylor’s Journey: Targeted Retakes
Taylor has completed her coursework and student teaching. She feels ready to tackle the Elementary Education Fundamentals Science test. Here’s how Praxis Steps can help Taylor:
- Full Test First: Taylor registers, schedules and takes the Science (8005) test.
- Targeted Retake: She does not pass and her score report shows that she specifically missed in the Physical Sciences Step. Rather than retake the entire Science test, Taylor retakes just the Step that she did not pass.
- Highest Scores: Her higher Physical Sciences Step result is applied to her overall test score and she passes her test.
- Faster, More Affordable Path: Taylor saves time and money by only retaking what she needs, keeping her momentum toward licensure.
This pathway is ideal for candidates ready to take the full test, but appreciate the safety net of targeted retakes.
Jordan's Journey: Step by Step
Jordan prefers to test after each content area is covered in his coursework, while the material is fresh. Praxis Steps lets him move at his own pace:
- Step-by-Step Testing: Jordan takes one Step of the Science (8005) test at a time–Earth and Space Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.
- Score Banking: Each time he completes a Step, his score is banked. When he finishes the last Step, he gets his overall test score and has passed.
- Personalized Progress: Jordan can focus on mastering each subject, reducing test anxiety and building confidence.
This pathway is perfect for candidates who want to build success incrementally, focusing on one area at a time.
How Candidates Benefit from Praxis Steps
- Flexibility: Choose the path that fits your learning style and schedule.
- Targeted Retakes: Retake only the Steps you need, saving time and money.
- Reduced Anxiety: Smaller, focused Steps can help candidates feel more prepared and confident on test day.
How Praxis Steps Supports States and EPPs
Praxis Steps doesn’t just benefit candidates—it gives states and EPPs more granular data to identify trends, support candidates, and improve programs. Praxis Steps supports a stronger teacher pipeline by helping more qualified candidates reach the classroom while maintaining high standards.
