What is Praxis Steps Modular Testing?
Praxis Steps is an innovative modular approach that allows candidates to take their licensure tests in smaller, focused sections—called “Steps.” This flexibility means candidates can test when they feel most prepared, reducing anxiety and barriers while maintaining rigorous standards. States and EPPs gain access to more granular data, enabling targeted support and continuous improvement.
Praxis Steps offers candidates two distinct pathways:
- Targeted Retake Path: Ideal for candidates ready to test all at once, with the safety net of targeted retakes. Candidates take the entire test in one sitting. If they do not pass, they can retake only the Step(s) they did not pass, saving time and money.
- Progression Path: Perfect for incremental progress, reducing stress and building confidence. Candidates take one or more Steps at a time, banking their results along the way. The highest results for each Step are applied toward their overall test score, allowing for a personalized progression through the licensure requirement process.
This approach ensures that every candidate—whether ready for the full test or preferring incremental progress—can demonstrate mastery in a way that fits their learning journey.
Benefits for States and EPPs: Better Data, Better Support
Praxis Steps isn’t just about flexibility for candidates—it’s a game-changer for states and EPPs:
- Targeted Support: Identify learning gaps and provide focused remediation to support candidates more effectively
- Program Improvement: Leverage more granular Step-level data to refine curriculum and drive program improvements.
- Reduced Barriers, Maintained Standards: More candidates can enter the classroom by retaking only the Steps they need, without lowering the bar for entry to the profession.
