Overview of Ohio Testing Requirements
Important notice:
Given the transition of School Psychologist licensure oversight from the Ohio State Board of Education (state code 7945) to the Ohio State Board of Psychology (state code 9680), effective January 1, 2025, it is advisable to designate both agencies as score recipients prior to January 1, 2025. This proactive measure will enhance efficiency and mitigate the potential need for ordering and remitting payment for additional score reports.
- As of September 1, 2013, the Ohio Assessments for Educators replaced many of the Praxis Subject Assessments as the required Ohio educator licensure tests.
- If you are a new candidate for teacher certification, please visit the Ohio State Board of Education website for further information.
For information on how to qualify for initial licensure in Ohio, visit the Ohio State Board of Education website.
- If you test in Ohio at a test center or at home, and your Praxis profile address is in Ohio, your score report will be sent automatically to the Ohio State Board of Education.
- If you test outside Ohio or your Praxis profile address is not in Ohio, your scores are NOT automatically sent to the Ohio State Board of Education. To have your scores sent to the Ohio State Board of Education, you must select the Ohio State Board of Education (state code 7945) as a score recipient when you register.
- For all methods of Praxis testing, to request additional score reports, you must select the Ohio State Board of Education (state code 7945) with each additional score report request.
- As of September 1, 2013, teacher candidates or other professional educators wishing to become licensed must take either the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) tests, the Praxis tests, or a combination of OAE and Praxis tests.
- Please visit the Ohio State Board of Education to determine which test(s), whether an OAE, a Praxis test, or a combination of both is required for your licensure area.

Asociate Certification
To be certified in Educational Para-Professional, no Praxis subject test required. School Districts may opt to use the Praxis ParaPro Assessment.
For the ParaPro Assessment, the State of Ohio has set a suggested qualifying score of 456. Contact your local school district to decide whether this assessment is required and if the state qualifying score is used.
- Ohio teachers of third-grade students who are on a reading improvement and monitoring plan or retained students now require special qualifications under the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.
- One way to fulfill the requirement is to pass the Praxis Teaching Reading: Elementary Education test. Review the Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee for more information.
