Overview of Indiana Testing Requirements
Registration for Praxis tests
Educators in Indiana have access to Praxis tests so that they can better demonstrate their knowledge of content, pedagogy, and instructional skills for their roles in Indiana schools.
For initial certification in Indiana, all candidates must:
- Establish an account in the online License Verification and Information System (LVIS).
- Complete an approved traditional or alternative path licensure program. Licensure in Career and Technical Education (CTE) areas also requires documented nonteaching occupational work experience.
- Complete applicable licensure tests.
- Select the applicable license application path in LVIS for your desired licensure action.
- Upload official transcripts of all degrees, coursework, test score reports, teaching experience, occupational work experience (if applicable), and other required documents as prompted.
- Provide proof of current CPR certification, including hands-on skill practice on a mannequin. Review approved providers.
- Provide proof of completion of suicide prevention training (must be at least 60 minutes).
- Review resources.
- Submit and pay for the application.
- Check out Indiana's application quick links for standards forms and checklists that pertain to licensure.
- If you test in Indiana at a test center or using the Praxis test at home solution, and your Praxis profile address is in Indiana, your score report will be sent automatically to the Indiana Department of Education.
- If you test outside Indiana or your Praxis profile address is not in Indiana, your scores are NOT automatically sent to the Indiana Department of Education. To have your scores sent to the Indiana Department of Education, you must select the Indiana Department of Education (state code 7238) as a score recipient when you register.
- For all methods of Praxis testing, to request additional score reports, you must select the Indiana Department of Education (state code 7238) with each additional score report request if you want the Indiana Department of Education to receive it.
- Review additional information about Sending Your Praxis Scores.
If your institution or organization wishes to purchase vouchers to pay Praxis test fees for sponsored test takers, please use the Indiana Bulk Voucher order form (PDF).
Many, but not all, content areas can be added to a valid existing license by testing alone. Additions do not require passage of a second pedagogy test. The addition of CTE areas also requires documented non-teaching occupational work experience. The following content areas may not be added to a valid existing license by testing alone (requires completion of both an approved program of coursework and testing):
- Early Childhood Generalist
- Elementary Generalist
- Special Education (mild intervention, intense intervention, blind and low vision, and deaf and hard of hearing)
- Communication Disorders (requires MS in Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and SLP licensure from the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency)
- Teachers of English Learners
- High Ability
- Fine Arts (instrumental and general music, vocal and general music, theater arts, and visual arts)
- Building and District-level Superintendent Administrative stand-alone license areas
- School Services stand-alone license areas (School Counselor, School Nurse, School Social Worker, Communication Disorders)
